Leh district (including Nubra valley, Changthang valley,
Pangong, Tsomoriri
and Indus valley) has 4,200 beds in its spread of 72 hotels and 185 guesthouses.
Leh town offers a stay option almost every few metres. The accommodation is
classified as A, B and C. You do not get telephones in rooms, fancy baths or
arrays of vials in Leh’s hotels – even in the top ones. And no speciality
restaurant either. What you do get is clean rooms, fresh sheets and towels,
reasonably good Tibetan, Chinese, Indian and Continental food (in the dining
room or terrace dining), friendly service and loads of atmosphere. The tariff at
A-class hotels is standardised at Rs. 2,325 and at B class hotels at Rs. 1,550
for double occupancy on an all-inclusive (AP) plan – though you may find a
little variation here or there. If you are on a budget it may be worthwhile to
check out guesthouses like Oriental and Asia in Changspa village, where at a
tariff of Rs. 300 for double, you get very clean rooms and great atmosphere.
In the top bracket, the most reliable are known to be the following hotels
