Drive up from Dhalli along the national highway that leads to Kufri. Continue along another particularly steep climb to the 2,600-m hilltop at Chharabra; 200 metres later, you will see Oberoi’s green-and-white, six-storey hotel, its spires jutting out between the trees of the cedar, rhododendron and oak forests which surround it. The hotel stands on 26-acre grounds, on the very spot where Lord Kitchener’s bungalow once stood.

The interior of the hotel is just as stately, with teak panelling, polished parquet floors spread with oriental rugs, luxurious furnishings and a well-appointed bar. Every window offers a fabulous view, and telescopes are placed at vantage points for guests to take a closer look at the snow-covered mountains: use the telescope in the Indian restaurant next to the lounge, or the one on the terrace outside the lounge.
