Kullu and Manali are generally spoken in the same breath, almost as if
they are one and the same place, but they’re not. Kullu is the district
headquarter of the region – a pleasant little town. Forty kilometres upstream
of the River Beas is Manali, a popular hill resort. The best part about this
small town is its easy accessibility by road from all parts of North India,
including Leh in Ladakh. The routes to Lahaul-Spiti, Baspa, Sangla and Pin
Valley are through Manali.
Though there are a few hundred hotels that range from flea-bag to flashy,
if you’re visiting during May and June, bookings are mandatory. July and
August see hundreds of foreign tourists visiting Manali, to make the most of the
adventure sports season. Besides trekking over the Rohtang Pass into Lahaul and
Spiti, they motorbike or hire jeeps into Leh. For the rest of the year, any long
weekend sees a heavy rush of tourists from all parts of North India. Especially
busy times include the Dussehra holidays, Puja, Christmas and New Year. Advance
bookings are necessary at these times.
