The
beautiful Royal Chitwan National Park is located 166 km
southwest of Kathmandu and nearly 204 km southeast of
Pokhara. The park sprawls across lushly wooded hills and
is home to a variety of flora and fauna. Chitwan offers
great tiger and rhino spotting opportunities.
Sightseeing
The
Royal Chitwan National Park is a sprawling area of low,
heavily forested hills bordering India in the south. A
veritable haven of wildlife, you can spot a wide variety
of animals like the one-horned rhino, elephant, leopard,
deer, wild boar and around 400 species of birds. The
park, formerly a royal hunting preserve, covers nearly
400 square miles of dense forest and is home to nearly
60 Bengal Tigers.
The
best time to visit the park is March through May. The
elephant grass at this time of the year grows up to 20
ft, which is too short to provide cover to the rhinos
who prefer this riverine environment. This is the
natural habitat of endangered animals like Bengal
Tigers, one-horned rhinoceros and gharial crocodile. The
park also secures populations of other endangered
species such as wild elephant, four-horned antelope,
striped hyena, pangolin, Gangetic dolphin, monitor
lizard and python.
