India’s
first national park and tiger reserve conceptualised in
1936, Corbett is located in the valley of the Ramganga
River in Uttaranchal. It comprises the Corbett Tiger
Reserve, which covers an area of 1,288 sq km, the
Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and reserve forest. Corbett
has a diverse topography – savannah grasslands, deep
gorges, rolling hills, narrow swift streams, reservoirs
and thick forest cover. The reserve provides an
opportunity to view a large variety of wildlife species,
including over a hundred tigers. It also has one of the
highest numbers of bird species, surpassing 600
varieties. Animal sightings are frequent, except for the
reclusive big cats. However, patience and some expert
tracking may reward you with the thrill of a lifetime.
One needs a permit to visit the park, available from the
park’s reception offices located in the neighbouring
towns of Ramnagar and Kotdwar.
